Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 23/7/08, 7/3/10  (click on the dates to see the photos)

Great Crag                                                     1500'

Great Crag from Watendlath

From Watendlath. 7/3/10

Early Spring was a good time to visit as the leafless trees allowed a better view of the fell.

Great Crag Bleatarn Gill

Footbridge Bleatarn Gill. 7/3/10

This small bridge is now on private land and only one of a few references which I had to get permission to visit.

Great Crag Dock tarn

Dock Tarn. 7/3/10

This is a delightful tarn surrounded by heather. On the day of this visit it was bitterly cold and the water was completely frozen over.

Great Crag boulder

Wall boulder. 7/3/10

The small wall that AW drew as a curiousity on top of this large boulder has now collapsed. Away in the distance is the snow covered Helvellyn range.

Great Crag Watendlath

From Watenlath Tarn. 7/3/10

Great Crag summit

The summit. 7/3/10

It was from this point (or very close to it) that AW was able to photograph 3 scenes which he would later use in the Pictorial Guides, this one of Great Crag summit and the two chapter main views for both Ullscarf and High Raise. It is Ullscarf that can be seen here in the distance.

Fell Complete.
