11th February 2009. Short walks and Catbells and then High Rigg

The weather forecast today was to determine my plans for the day. With poor weather early on becoming brighter later I headed over to the Keswick area. It was dull but dry when I got there but low cloud meant the tops of the high fells were obscured. This gave me the opportunity to take a lower level walk to get some other references in Wythop Wood.

Heading up through the wood after parking at Beck Wythop.

Across Bass Lake to Binsey.

Dodd, with Skiddaw in cloud.

Zeta on the memorial seat.

Wild Boar in the woods to the west. (Not a real one of course, just a target for the archery range.)

The Ladies table. There is no path to it, there is no view and there is even very little light falling on it. In the future when the trees are felled it will probably regain its place as a fine viewpoint.

A view over to a dull Ullock Pike as I return to the car through the woods.

From here I spent a short time in Keswick before heading up to Catbells.

I took the path on the east of the fell, the old green road. Skiddaw behind me was now in sun and almost free of cloud.

A visit to Old Brandley Mine. From here I headed up to the north ridge of Catbells.

The view over Derwentwater.

The view north from the ridge.

Causey Pike with Grisedale Pike behind. What a change in the weather.

Catbells pinnacle.

Even up here Zeta finds a stick to play with. (Zoe was not with us today as she has a sore pad- nothing serious)

From Hause Gate looking east to the Helvellyn range with its good covering of fresh snow.

I made a detour to Yewthwaite Combe to get this view of Catbells.

Old mine workings below Hause gate.

Afternoon sun, from the path to Skelgill.

Nearing Skelgill. The afternoon light was proving the forecasters right. When I reached the car I thought I could get one more short walk in before returning home.

Parking at the church in St John's in the Vale I headed up to High Rigg. Late light on Blencathra behind me.

No time to hang around, it took me 10 minutes to reach the top to get this shot of Clough Head. To see the sketches of Clough Head click here.

The last of the light touches the Helvellyn range.

and then it was gone...Another good and varied day on the fells.
